Why I Don’t Believe in God

The tree grows, grasping the open sky
Branches growing toward light
As if it wishes to consume the sun itself
Dead branches mark it’s mistakes
Yet the tree does not reach the sun.

The root grows away from the light,
Shunning the colors of the sky for the dark
It twists to where the nutrients are
It dives into the earth
Yet it does not try to analyze the nutrients.

A branch seeks no minerals, a root
Seeks no light yet
Both are necessary…
And I sit, contemplate
Every action has a reaction.

The tree affects the ground and earth,
A bridge between two alien worlds it
Is of both worlds, a reflection –
For where the earth does not meet it’s needs
It does not grow.

Some of us get dressed weekly to
Impress our neighbors,
Show them our faith extraneously
A harlequade,
A reflection of what our deity is.

Some of us donate large sums of money
Advertising our faith in newspapers
Marketing ourselves through faith
In large sums of money.
I wonder, does it bare interest?

Some of us are so impressed with our faith
We insist that we are right, that all others are
Wrong,
Sinful -
And yet these other trees grow.

Some of us discuss our breaches of faith
(When we remember)
And pay penance and some cash
And think that it is all done…
Ten sins for $9.99, save your penny.

Some of us fight over land, ending lives over
A difference in perception
Spilling the blood of those different
On land that we say is Holy
We desecrate ourselves.

What we do reflects our selves
What we are reflects our beliefs
Our beliefs reflect our deities
Our deities reflect what we do.
A tree reflects the environment.

If these are our Gods,
This is why I do not believe in God
If these are our actions
Consider me an observer -
A conscientious objector.
